Cancer ma’s immig fight

- Denis Slattery

A BROOKLYN mom battling cancer is being forced to fight for her husband’s return after he was denied return entry into the U.S.

Maria Paxtor Perez (bottom photo) is in the midst of chemotherapy treatments for stage 4 breast cancer.

Her husband, Benjamin Barragan, is stuck in Mexico after returning to his home country on March 7 to fill out paperwork for a green card.

Perez, 47, is from Guatemala but is an American citizen. The couple have two young boys who are heartbroken over their parents’ plight.

“It’s been kind of upsetting and disappointing and I guess a little stressful,” 11-year-old Cristian Barragan told WABC-7.

“My mom is sick, she can’t really do stuff that my dad used to do, and now he's gone so he can't really do stuff," said Daniel, 8.

Barragan (photo top) is being denied a green card because he was caught crossing the border illegally in 1994.

A GoFundMe set up for the family has raised $25,009 of its $50,000 goal as of Saturday.
