In 1972, Bobby Fischer became the world champion of chess by beating the Soviet Union’s Boris Spassky. Though — forgive him — born in Chicago, Fischer was raised in Brooklyn. Check. This fall, Fabiano Caruana, 25, will face off against Norway’s Magnus Carlsen for that same coveted title, the first American to vie for the throne since Fischer. Caruana, born in Miami, was also raised in Brooklyn. Check mate.
