GENO BOLTS

-

GENO SMITH is trading the Big Apple for Hollywood.

The former Giants and Jets quarterback has agreed to a one-year deal with the Chargers, according to a statement from the team.

Smith will likely become Philip Rivers’ primary backup, with former Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones serving as the third-string.

In Los Angeles, Smith will be reunited with Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn, who served as the Jets running backs coach during Smith’s two years as a starter with Gang Green from 2013-2014.

Smith started one game last year in his lone season with the Giants, throwing for 212 yards and one touchdown in a 24-17 loss to the Raiders. He was also sacked three times and lost two fumbles.

The decision by ex-Giants coach Ben McAdoo to bench Eli Manning in favor of Smith resulted in immediate backlash from fans and ended up being the nail in the coffin for McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese, who were both shown the door. Steve Spagnuolo handed the reins back to Manning shortly after being named interim head coach in the middle of the season.

Before heading out the door, McAdoo told Smith that based on his performance against the Raiders, he felt that the 27-year-old quarterback deserved to start the rest of the season, Smith previously told the Daily News.

“When Coach Mac was let go and left the building, I talked to him before he left, and he had told me he felt like I deserved to play the rest of the season,” Smith said.

“He believed in me. A lot of people did. Guys wanted me to do well. But there are some things that are out of your control.”

Throughout his five-year career, Smith has shown flashes of potential, but the secondround pick out of West Virginia has also been plagued by turnovers.

In 35 games with the Jets and Giants, Smith threw for just 29 touchdowns while being picked off 36 times and losing 10 fumbles.
