An umbrella jolt sparks PATH pain
PERTURBED COMMUTERS streamed out of a smoke-filled Ninth St. PATH station Monday morning after a bizarre chain of events that started with an open umbrella.
It turned out the train made contact with the umbrella, causing a third-rail outage.
Commuters riding the Hoboken-33rd St. or Journal Square-33rd St. lines around 8:40 a.m saw the smoke and sent tweets to PATH officials .
“Very scary,” wrote Twitter user @GFSpeaksSports. “Evacuated at 9th street.”
First responders were on the scene, where the problem was quickly brought under control, officials said.
“There is a modest smoke condition at the 9th Street Station caused by a train coming in contact with an open umbrella on track, leading to a third rail outage,” PATH tweeted. “The smoke is being cleared from the station by exhaust fans.”
