Trump echoes call for wall in ‘nuclear’ rage
WASHINGTON — President Trump demanded Monday that Congress pass new border legislation using the “Nuclear Option if necessary” to muscle it through the Senate — a drastic change in rules the Senate’s Republican leader has previously dismissed.
Trump tweeted that U.S. immigration laws were inadequate compared with those of other countries.
“Honduras, Mexico and many other countries that the U.S. is very generous to, sends many of their people to our country through our WEAK IMMIGRATION POLICIES,” he posted.
He also repeated his erroneous claim that a deal to help Dreamer immigrants is “dead because the Democrats didn’t care or act.”
And he absurdly warned of immigrants heading to the U.S. border in waves.
“Caravans are heading here. Must pass tough laws and build the WALL. Democrats allow open borders, drugs and crime!” Trump said.
The $1.3 trillion funding package Congress passed last month included $1.6 billion in border wall spending. Much of that money can be used only to repair existing segments, however, and Congress put restrictions on the types of barriers that can be built.
