A rotten pol’s parting gift
Good riddance to Brooklyn’s Pamela Harris, who resigned Monday from the state Assembly three months after the feds indicted her on fraud charges. And a very, very, very small thank you to the same disgraced politician. On her way out, Harris mumbled gobbledygook about “recent events” interfering with her ability to represent constituents. The harsh truth is she’ll go on trial for allegedly pocketing $25,000 in federal funds and diverting cash from a nonprofit to pay her mortgage, go on vacation and buy lingerie.
Our minuscule expression of thanks comes because Harris, herself elected in a 2015 special election, stepped down too late in the year to allow a special election to fill her seat.
Which means, rather than having local party bosses pick who gets put on the ballot on the Democratic line — and, by extension, who inevitably wins the general election in the safe district — voters will get to choose a standard-bearer through a competitive primary.
Instead of making a mockery of democracy, the process to pick her replacement will show a modicum of respect for the voters of South Brooklyn. May they choose wisely.
