Feds: We did not withhold vid evidence
PROSECUTORS trying to convict a retired NYPD cop and a deeppocketed mayoral donor on corruption charges hit back Thursday at allegations they withheld critical video evidence.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Ravener, who is trying to make a case against ex-NYPD Deputy Inspector James Grant and de Blasio donor Jeremy Reichberg, said the controversial video had been part of the public record for over a year.
The video, recorded by admitted cop-briber Alex Lichtenstein just before his April 17, 2016 arrest, contained a potentially exculpatory statement about Grant, defense lawyers argue.
Lawyers for Grant and Reichberg have said the feds never turned over copies of Lichtenstein’s surreptitious recording – which was first revealed by the Daily News.
Prosecutors received the video from Lichtenstein’s lawyer, Ravener said, but don’t believe it’s pertinent to the case.
Judge Gregory Woods is expected to push the trial back from its scheduled April 30 start date because of concerns defense lawyers raised about evidence.
