AN UPSTATE nurse was charged with decapitating her 7-year-old son with a largeblade kitchen knife in a grisly attack 10 days after she was released from a hospital psych ward, according to police.

Hanane Mouhib, 36, was charged with second-degree murder Thursday after police, responding to frantic 911 calls, found the first-grader, Abraham Cardenas, in the family’s Sweden, N.Y., home.

According to court papers, Mouhib stabbed the child in the upper back and cut his neck, severing his head.

“There’s absolutely no explanation for this,” Sheriff Todd Baxter said at a news conference Friday.

“The word mind.” ‘evil’ comes to

Mouhib’s husband, motherin-law and a 10-year-old boy were in the house, and were not injured, Baxter said. They’ve been moved to an undisclosed location, WHAM-TV reported.

He said they hadn’t seen any warning signs, and were taken by surprise at the slaying.

“I will never find the words to adequately describe, or reconcile with what happened inside Abraham Cardenas’ home ... ” Baxter said.

“A young boy with a life full of promise ahead of him is no longer with us to hope, prosper, and fulfill his dreams.”

Mouhib, a licensed nurse practitioner who specializes in mental health and worked for Rochester Regional health from January 2016 to January 2017, WGRZ-TV reported, called the sheriff’s office March 5 for help with mental health problems, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

She called 911 again March 8, and was taken to the Rochester General Hospital’s mental health unit, where she remained until her March 26 release, Baxter said.

Ten days later, Baxter said, the sheriff’s office got three 911 calls from the home — including one reporting a suicidal woman with a knife.

Deputies had to use pepper spray and a stun gun to subdue Mouhib, who refused to drop the knife, he said.

Brockport District Superintendent Lesli Myers called the slaying “a very shocking situation for us,” remembering the first-grader at Barclay Elementary School as an “engaged learner” who “lit up a room any time he entered it.”

Myers said grief counselors would be sent to the school Monday, when students return after spring break.

Mouhib is being held in the county jail without bail. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday.
