Hack held in near-kidnap at Kennedy

- Thomas Tracy

AN OFF-THE-BOOKS livery cab ride nearly turned into a kidnapping at Kennedy Airport, authorities said Saturday.

Port Authority cops arrested a 61-year-old cabbie they say was illegally trolling for fares at JFK Airport — then refused to let a woman out of his cab after she changed her mind about the sketchy ride, officials said.

The 37-year-old victim told cops Daniel Todaro approached her outside of one of the departure terminals and offered to drive her home about 1 a.m. Friday.

He falsely claimed to be a licensed livery driver and the woman accepted. But when she got into Todaro’s car she quickly changed her mind .

Todaro began arguing with her and locked the doors, she told police.

Port Authority police heard the woman screaming and ran over to Todaro’s vehicle, finding the panicked woman locked in the back seat.

Todaro abandoned his vehicle and tried to run off but was quickly nabbed, Port Authority spokesman Joseph Pentangelo said. He was charged with unlawful imprisonment, criminal trespass and unlawful solicitation.

A Queens Criminal Court Judge ordered Todaro released without bail after a brief arraignment proceeding Friday.

Even licensed livery cab drivers can only make pre-arranged pickups at city airports.

Todaro was given a violation in September for illegally picking up fares and has been branded a “habitual airport hustler,” Port Authority police said.

He has been banned from operating at JFK Airport, cops said.
