Reluctantly, CC joins host of Bombers on DL

-

Two more Yankees are headed to the disabled list. CC Sabathia and Brandon Drury were both placed on the 10-day DL on Saturday with Sabathia battling a right hip strain and Drury suffering from severe migraines. Sabathia, who was pulled from Friday night’s 7-3, 14-inning loss after the fourth inning with hip soreness, was adamant after the game he would not have to go on the disabled list. When he arrived to the clubhouse before Saturday’s 8-3 win over the Orioles he did not exactly sound thrilled with the decision.

“I don’t have anything new to say,” he said when reporters approached his locker.

When asked if he was surprised by the move to the DL, he replied, “I guess,” and walked away.

GM Brian Cashman told the Daily News that they made the decision Friday night and that there was some pushback from the 37-year-old southpaw.

“I talked to him last night when he was leaving and he was like, ‘I can pitch,’” Cashman said. “I was like, ‘Dude, you just came out of a game and you couldn’t finish, so why would we think that in five days or six days from now you could? That’s just playing with fire. And you have a knee condition that you’re managing.’”

Cashman said Sabathia ultimately understood the reasoning and added that the lefty came in sore on Saturday.

“We have five and a half months to go, so we’re not going to make a mistake here,” said Cashman. “You get a chance to know your athletes, and CC is as tough as they come and pitches through a lot. . . . With his age, with that knee, I’m not going to take any chances.”

The Yankees recalled right-hand pitchers Luis Cessa and Domingo German from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding roster move.

They also optioned reliever Jonathan Holder to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre and called up utility man Jace Peterson.

ONE NIGHT STAND

With the Yankees playing a 1 p.m. game after their 14-inning marathon on Friday and a lot on his plate, manager Aaron Boone decided to spend the night at Yankee Stadium.

“I actually stayed here last night, with so much going on,” Boone said. “I got a good night sleep but it didn’t come quick.”

Boone grinned and said it wasn’t in his office, but added he “found a good spot.”

WADING OUT THE FLU

Tyler Wade said he was feeling better after leaving Friday’s game with the flu, but shed light on just how bad it was to force him out of the game.

“I was dry heaving between innings,” Wade said. “I tried to stick it out but my last at-bat I had zero energy and thought I was hurting the team more than helping.”

Wade said he was getting IV and fluids and would see where he is at for Sunday. …. Yankees minor league pitcher Ben Heller underwent Tommy John Surgery on Saturday and had a spur removed in his right elbow.
