DWI driver grabs his tot, flees wreck: cops
A DRUNK Long Island man driving with his 9-month-old daughter crashed into a tree early Sunday — then grabbed the tot and fled, according to police.
Kevin Caceres, 25, was behind the wheel of a 2001 Honda CRV on Clearstream Ave. in Valley Stream when he struck a tree a few blocks from his home about 2:20 a.m., Nassau County Police allege.
He grabbed his crying baby in her car seat and ran off, a witness told cops.
Cops spotted Caceres nearby and arrested him. He had bloodshot eyes and reeked of booze, authorities said.
The baby was taken to the hospital as a precaution and then dropped off with her mother, police said.
Caceres was charged with driving while intoxicated, endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger, otherwise known as Leandra’s Law.
The law is named after Leandra Rosado, an 11-year-old Chelsea girl killed in a booze-fueled crash on the Henry Hudson Parkway in 2009.
Leandra’s friend’s mother, Carmen Huertas, was drunk and speeding when she lost control of her car. Six other children were injured in the crash.
Huertas is serving 12 years in prison for Leandra’s death.
