German killer was

THE CRAZED driver who rammed his van into a crowd, killing two people in Germany, had past run-ins with the law and expressed suicidal thoughts a month before the attack, prosecutor­s said Sunday.

Authoritie­s believe the 48-year-old man acted alone when he drove into bystanders enjoying a warm Saturday afternoon outside a bar in Muenster’s Old Town section before fatally shooting himself in his van. At least 20 people were injured, several seriously.

The man’s identity has not been released. Police said he was financiall­y well off, while local reports described him as an industrial designer.

A motive remained unknown. Officials said Sunday they “have no indication­s that there is a political background” for the attack.

The attacker had been previously charged with hit-and-run, fraud and making threats between 2015 and 2016, prosecutor­s said.

He appeared before a judge three times in Muenster and once in Arnsberg. Charges against him were dropped each time.

In March, the man sent an email to a neighbor saying he was suicidal but didn’t mention he had plans to harm anyone, prosecutor­s said.
