Gang will meet with Sam

-

Here’s a glimmer of hope for the “Suck for Sam” truthers hell bent on the Jets landing Sam Darnold: The USC quarterback is coming to town.

Darnold will indeed make a pre-draft visit to the Jets facility, according to a source. The dynamic prospect is also slated to spend time with the Giants this week, according to MMQB.

The Daily News reported several weeks ago that Gang Green was operating under the belief that Darnold would be the No. 1 overall pick. Jets brass that included Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles attended Darnold’s Pro Day in Los Angeles a couple weeks ago, but they did not hold a private workout with him. The team’s brain trust, however, has held private sessions with quarterbacks Josh Rosen, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield in the run-up to the draft.

The fact that the Jets added Darnold to their Official Top 30 visit list could mean that they now believe there’s a possibility that the Browns take Allen with the top overall pick. Would the Jets give up more draft capital to swap with the Giants at No. 2 if Darnold were on the board? Or are they simply crossing their Ts and dotting their Is in case Darnold is available at No. 3?

Besides, would the Giants even consider trading out of the No. 2 spot if Darnold were available?

Here’s something else to consider: The Jets already parted with three second-round picks to move from No. 6 to No. 3. How much more would they be willing to dole out to move up one more spot? The Bears traded away two third-rounders and one fourthrounder to the 49ers to move up from No. 3 to No. 2 for Mitchell Trubisky last year.

I don’t think it makes much sense for the Jets to effectively gut their drafts for the next two seasons, but desperate times might call for desperate measures. — Mehta
