Doormen clear way for strike
THOUSANDS OF New York’s doormen, handymen and maintenance workers say they will stop working if they cannot agree on a contract with the city’s landlords.
Members of 32BJ SEIU, one of the city’s largest labor unions, voted Wednesday during an Upper East Side rally to go on strike if their bargaining committee fails to negotiate higher wages and benefits with the Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations, which represents property owners, by April 20.
Mayor de Blasio told the crowd the city “will be standing by you.”
The advisory board president, Howard Rothschild, said he’s “hopeful” the unions will reach a fair agreement by the end of the month.
