Victim’s kin: Make cops show uncut tape

-

“I’ve been going through this for six years,” said Malcolm, noting it was her son’s birthday. “We want the real story. We want to see the tapes, all the tapes — not just what you want to release.”

The NYPD released edited video of Vassell prior to the shooting, opting not to make public the complete video of his death.

The four officers who opened fire were not identified by name, although cops said none was involved in any previous on-duty shooting.

The five cops at the scene were de-

scribed as two whites, one Hispanic, one black and one southeast Asian.

The NYPD said the officers fired 10 shots at Vassell when he ignored their command to drop whatever was in his hands. A woman who called 911 before the killing told the Daily News that the shooting was justified.

But the Vassell family still believes there is more to the case.

“Saheed did not deserve to be killed by the New York Police Department,” said his mother Lorna Vassell. “And I’m just asking for. . .justice for Saheed Vassell, because Saheed Vassell is a very intelligent young man, and he did not deserve to be killed.”

The family also pushed back on reports that Vassell was homeless or dangerous. Vassell was diagnosed as bipolar and refused to take his prescribed medication.

“I am here in need of justice for my brother, demanding the names of the four officers that opened fire on Saheed,” said his sister Telah, an active duty member of the U.S. military.

She specifically asked for more information regarding the NYPD protocols for responding to situations with an armed suspect or the mentally ill.
