Doormen avert strike with four-year pact
A CONTRACT deal announced on Friday averted a citywide doorman, handyman and maintenance worker strike.
Members of 32BJ SEIU, one of the city’s largest labor unions, reached a tentative agreement with the Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations, a group of building owners in the tristate area.
The unratified deal included 11.3% pay raises over four years for the workers, as well as better retirement plans and protections against harassment.
“This agreement honors the valuable contributions of the hardworking men and women who keep our building running and make our city strong,” union president Hector Figueroa said. “With this agreement our members, our families and our communities are moving forward.”
The realty board confirmed the agreement in a tweet.
“We are proud to have reached a fair and successful agreement. It will continue to create and provide middle class jobs and ultimately bring us to more than thirty years of uninterrupted labor peace,” the board’s president Howard Rothschild said.
“Both sides thoughtfully considered the economic realities. . . allowing us to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.”
The union represents more than 31,000 doorman, porters, handymen and superintendents in 3,500 buildings throughout Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island.
