Bats silenced by Brewers as win

-

AS THE wind gusts picked up at Citi Field on Saturday and the temperatures dropped, the Mets bats froze.

They managed just three hits throughout the game as Brewers pitchers Chase Anderson, Jeremy Jeffress and Josh Hader stifled the Mets to hand them their second loss of the season in a 5-1 defeat.

The Mets struck out a total of 10 times and had a runner in scoring position just twice the entire game as they failed to pose any kind of threat to the Brewers at the plate.

Afterward they just chalked it up to good pitching.

“Tip your cap to their pitchers tonight,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “They pitched a hell of a game.”

Anderson took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing a two-out single to Amed Rosario. An inning later he allowed an RBI bloop single to Yoenis Cespedes, but was never in any real danger, holding the Mets to two hits over 6.1 innings while striking out five.

Jay Bruce, who went 0-for-3 with a strikeout, said Anderson was so effective because he was getting ahead in the count.

“He didn’t make a lot of mistakes,” he said. “Got ahead and just kept us off balance. He pitched a nice game.”

Anderson was also the second pitcher this week to flirt with a nohitter against the Mets.

Marlins pitcher Jarlin Garcia had a no-hitter through six innings
