Double trouble on rainy day

- BY MIKE MAZZEO

DETROIT — The Bombers were rained out of Saturday’s game against the Tigers. A split-doubleheader is scheduled for Sunday at Comerica Park, but both games could be in jeopardy since it’s not supposed to stop raining in the area until Monday.

The pitching matchups would be Luis Severino vs. Francisco Liriano in Game 1 (1:10 p.m.) and Luis Cessa vs. Matthew Boyd in Game 2 (7:10).

“It doesn’t look very good,” Aaron Boone said. “I’d like to think it would be called intelligently ahead of time, but we’ll see.”

The Yankees — who weren’t slated to come back to Detroit again — and Tigers have common off-days on May 24, June 4, June 11, June 18 and Aug. 20 in case a makeup date is needed.

The Bombers were snowed out of their home-opener on April 2, which was made up the following day.

If they are rained out, Severino would be pushed back to Monday against the Marlins.

Regardless of what happens, CC Sabathia (hip) is probably locked in to start on Tuesday in his return from the disabled list. So Masahiro Tanaka, who is slated for Monday, could perhaps be pushed back all the way to Thursday. The Bombers are off Wednesday.

Cessa, who was supposed to start on Saturday, may be bumped from the rotation without ever getting one — at least for now. Last season, he went 0-3 with a 5.82 ERA in five starts.

BIG TOE

Ronald Torreyes has made the most of his opportunity, delivering a .429 batting average. Torreyes didn’t get into his first game until April 4.

The Yankees remain high on Tyler Wade (.094), but his struggles could open up more playing time for Torreyes. Top prospect Gleyber Torres could also become a factor on the infield soon enough.

“The major-league season has a way of working itself out to where the guys that should be out there are usually out there,” Boone said. “Fortunate for us we’ve got Ronald and when he’s had his opportunities here early, he’s made the most of them.”

UNLUCKY SEVEN

The Yankees are 7-7. They’ve scored 77 runs and allowed 77 runs.
