More subways, fewer homeless
Manhattan: Last year, more than 111,000 New York City schoolchildren were homeless. Already challenged by a dysfunctional school system, these students have a far more difficult time receiving a competent education. The usual school advocates are calling for their rote solution to any problem: more money. With New York having nearly the highest costs per student in the nation, more money is not the answer. The only solution that can work is a stable home environment with active parent participation in their children’s education.
Last year, New York City built less than 30,000 new housing units, when there should have been 100,000 to accommodate the city’s growing population. New York must do what it did in the early 20th century when it faced exploding population: It built subway lines across the open lands of Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx to serve the new housing to be built. There are huge areas of underdeveloped land in the outer boroughs that could accommodate hundreds of thousands of new units, if they only had transit.
Build the subways to where the housing can be built and streamline the torturous rezoning and new construction approval process. Transit and housing are the two most important issues facing New York today. Unless these problems are addressed, the future of the city is in mortal danger. The children do not have time to wait.

Propaganda partner
Mineola, L.I.: Sean Hannity’s fawning devotion to President Trump takes propaganda to a stratospheric level. Imagine Orwell by way of Goebbels. The Fox News infotainment anchor routinely intermingles falsehoods, conspiracy theories and cant to promote POTUS 45 and impede the progress of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Hannity has also impugned the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community, and demonized the Democrats as unpatriotic. Veteran journalist Ted Koppel publicly upbraided Hannity last year in a televised face-to-face exchange, stating, “You have attracted people who are determined that ideology is more important than facts.” But the Fox News luminary has sunk to a new low, and embroiled himself in a tawdry conflict of interest, by failing to disclose his relationship with Michael Cohen, the notorious Trump attorney.

For the books
Bayonne: I worked for the government in the mid-1960s in the Washington, D.C., area. One of the first forms to be filled out and signed upon entering government service was one saying “I will not write a book about my job,” or something to that effect. I can’t help but wonder how James Comey, ex-FBI director, feels that he is exempt from this provision.

Howard Beach: I love the Daily News, and the best part is Voice of the People. I want to let you know that Jimmy Kimmel is the biggest bigot. If he wants to be critical of Melania Trump’s accent, it is a choice. But he offended millions of us who are American citizens, patriots, who came to this country legally and speak English: bluecollar workers, doctors, architects. Yes, we speak with accents. Like Dr. Henry Kissinger said, if you come after the age of 12, you speak with an accent. I bet that Kimmel’s ancestors came from somewhere, maybe from Italy. They speak English. J. Formanek
Stop the conspirators
South Ozone Park: Mr. President, I urge you to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions immediately and replace him with Jeanine Pirro. There is a DNC and RINO plot to overthrow your presidency by the FBI using Gestapo tactics. No more tweets, Mr. President. As a former President said: “Walk softly and carry a big stick.” Guess what that stick was going to be used for? Declare war on the DNC and the RINOs. Start hitting back. J.L. Bezett
Worst of the worst
Hazlet, N.J.: To Voicer Jeanette LaRocco: I don’t belong to any political party. I voted once and found it to be a waste of time. If all I have is a choice between bad and worse, I’m going with choice “C.” Other than Sen. Chuck Schumer, I’d be hard-pressed to name another politician who’s worth a crap. Donald Trump will never look for or find a cure for cancer because Donald Trump is a cancer. Even in a right-wing rag like the New York Post, they can’t even print a picture of him where he looks somewhat presidential. But if he did find the cure for cancer, I could picture a couple of parents bringing their 4-year-old child to Trump and telling them that their child has cancerous brain tumors and him telling them that he’d love to help them but they just don’t have enough insurance to cover the cost of treatment and we need to make those insurance rates great again.

Stained reputation
Manhasset Hills, L.I.: Of course, the Daily News article on Cecile Richards didn’t go into detail on Planned Parenthood’s gruesome termination of the lives of unborn children (“Good kind of ‘trouble,’ ” April 8). With Planned Parenthood’s 330,000 abortions a year, Richards has more blood on her hands than a commandant at a Nazi concentration camp.

East Elmhurst: Wednesday’s paper showed a picture of a NYCHA repair job in progress (“Judges paint a bumbling NYCHA”). The walls have new sheetrock with the plaster sanded and finished. However, the ceiling is crumbling with visible mold. What are they going to do — rip out the ceiling now, or six months from now? Is it any wonder why NYCHA has such a terrible reputation for doing repairs? Jim Vroman

Staten Island: Mayor de Blasio hopes that disbursing dry ice to combat the rat problem at NYCHA developments will curtail the condition. The rats are so persistent that they will become immune to the dry ice. How about trying the older fashioned way to combat the problem: Deploy some stray cats! Victory will be certain. Lawrence A. NYPD called to account
Brooklyn: Re “Councilman Rory Lancman blasts NYPD on failure to produce fare-beating arrest reports” (April 19): The NYPD’s violation of protocols and war crimes they have committed reflect chronic wrongdoing and the department’s complicity. The future will bring a citizens’ database that will track cases like mine, where a government official or agency that should’ve done something passed the corruption buck. Every agency that was supposed to police the police passed my case to Internal Affairs or the chief of department to die.

Letdowns on the ladder
Brooklyn: Congratulations to all the new FDNY firefighters (“Bravest son,” April 19). Good to hear Commissioner Daniel Nigro did not mention former commissioner Sal Cassano’s son in his speech. He does not deserve to be included with the sons of great firefighters who gave their lives protecting all New Yorkers like Ray Pfeifer FRANK FRANKLIN II and George Froehlich. Cassano will go down in history as the worst FDNY commissioner. His part in the Deutsche Bank fire coverup is a disgrace. Mark O’Connor, retired firefighter
School daze
Brooklyn: In their never-ending quest for votes, liberal pols are pushing for diversity in elite schools by making it easy for nonqualified students to be accepted. Don’t they realize, or even care, that doing this would make the schools no longer elite? What’s next? Legalizing marriage between humans and their pets with the pet then attaining the right to vote?
