No-car park

-

Two months from now, with summer (what’s that?) in bloom, Central Park will be entirely free of cars save the four walled trenches that criss-cross east-to-west. Good! After decades of part-time and part-way experiments that bit by bit phased traffic off park roads shared with cyclists and skaters and walkers and strollers all fighting for a sliver of space, air and calm, Mayor de Blasio has given the go-ahead to ban private motor vehicles every day of the year, on every road within the park.

In a city with so few places to let one’s guard down, the freedom and greenery a fully car-free Central Park will afford will be treasured by so many more than the few who will lose a cherished taxi shortcut or a favorite way to impress dates.

The 843-acre green jewel at the heart an ever more crowded and traffic-clogged Manhattan will finally fulfill its destiny as the oasis it was always intended to be, like Brooklyn’s Prospect Park before it earlier this year.

With cars out, de Blasio will be sorely tempted to move carriage horses in, removing their lineup from their historic row along Central Park South as demanded by wealthy campaign donors, never mind any blow to drivers’ business.

Mayor, don’t even think about tarnishing a brilliant move with a pile of manure.
