ATLANTA — Yoenis Cespedes snapped out of a four-strikeout daze with a game-winning single as the Mets rallied to beat the Braves 5-3 in 12 innings at SunTrust Park Friday.
The Mets (14-5) took their ninth comeback win of the season and their second win in extra innings. It was their first victory over the Braves (11-8) this season.
Robert Gsellman, who hit for himself after pitching his second scoreless inning, reached when Josh Ravin’s inside pitch grazed his jersey. He advanced to second on a well-placed Amed Rosario bunt and scored from there on Cespedes’ ground ball to right field. Cespedes then scored on Cabrera's double off the right-field wall.
The Mets improved to 13-3 in games started by Noah Syndergaard after a loss. The big right hander allowed three runs on seven hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out six. Ozzie Albies had given the Braves the lead, turning on Syndergaard's 100-mile an hour fastball for a leadoff home run.
The Mets rallied to take the lead in the third. Amed Rosario doubled in Tomas Nido and Michael Conforto scored the shortstop with a sacrifice fly to left. Todd Frazier gave the Mets an insurance run in the fourth, drawing a walk and stealing second before scoring on Wilmer Flores’ single to right.
Jay Bruce’s miscue on a line drive to right in the fourth helped the Braves cut the Mets’ lead to a run. The right fielder, who has been dealing with plantar fasciitis, reached up but did not leap and the ball went over his head, allowing Dansby Swanson to score.
Flores was thrown out trying to score from second on a double in the sixth and Asdrubal Cabrera was on third when Flores flew out to left in the eighth.
