YANKGAMEDAY

-

The boo-birds did not rain down on Giancarlo Stanton Monday night in the Bronx.

No, this was the kind of evening Yankee fans have expected more often from the superstar slugger and the touted lineup, one in which they’d erupt in cheer and be wowed at Stanton’s impressive power. That was their reaction when Stanton blasted a Jake Odorizzi curveball 435 feet into the left-center field bleachers during the fifth inning of the Yankees’ 14-1 romp over the Twins.

Didi Gregorius made this one a laugher with his eighth-inning grand slam. Miguel Andujar had a homer and a double, extending his streak with an extra-base hit to seven games. The 14 runs are a season-high for the Yanks.

Stanton, who was the DH on Monday, finished the game 4-for-4 with two RBI, three runs and a walk. He has five home runs this season, three of which have come in Yankee Stadium. The multi-hit game was Stanton’s first since April 11 in Boston and his four hits are a season-high. He was 3-for-30 in eight appearances between then and Monday. Stanton, who drove in Aaron Judge with an RBI single in the seventh, reached base in every plate appearance for the first time this season. He finished without striking out for the sixth time this season.

Five runs was plenty of support for Masahiro Tanaka, who allowed one run in 6.2 innings, giving up three hits and two walks hile striking out five as the right-hander bounced back from two rough outings. The start marked the deepest Tanaka has gone in his five starts thus far.

The Yankees (12-9) have won three consecutive games for the first time this season, and they’ve allowed only one run in each of the three victories.
