Cop fighting parole bid by his shooter

- Thomas Tracy

MAN imprisoned for shooting and wounding a cop nearly 30 years ago is getting a shot at freedom.

A parole hearing is scheduled this week for Shawn Boyd, who was convicted of attempted murder for shooting retired NYPD Detective Paul Yurkiw during a car stop on June 21, 1989, in Queens.

Boyd, 51, has served 29 years in prison, mostly at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in upstate Wallkill, officials said.

“We’re all concerned,” Yurkiw, 63, about Boyd’s hearing. “I would rather he not be out in the civilian population.

“He meant to kill me,” he said. “There are are no two ways about it.”

Despite his conviction, sources with knowledge of the case said Boyd (photo) has always claimed he was innocent of opening fire on Yurkiw, who was shot three times in the chest after stopping to help a motorist who had pulled over on the Van Wyck Expressway.

After this week’s hearing, the board will release their decision to either approve or deny Boyd’s parole in a few weeks, state officials said.
