PLAYERS TO WATCH

- By Manish Mehta

BAKER MAYFIELD/ JOSH ROSEN/JOSH ALLEN/ SAM DARNOLD

Who will be the next (fingers crossed) franchise quarterback? Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles' jobs are on the line with this massive decision. Mayfield is more than just an excitable leader. The guy has video-game like accuracy, but will his physical limitations — he's just above 6-feet — be an insurmountable barrier at the next level?

Rosen, the best pure pocket passer in the draft, has all the makings of being a cerebral assassin, but his inability to consistently elude pressure is a fair concern. Will the former UCLA signal caller with a surgically repaired shoulder and two concussions last season on his resume be able to stay upright to have a long NFL career?

The 6-5, 238-pound Allen looks like he was built in a laboratory, but there will be a learning curve. Does this Jets regime have time to take on another developmental quarterback?

Darnold is destined for Cleveland (good luck with that), but if he somehow slips to No. 3, the Mayfield-Rosen debate likely becomes moot.

GEORGIA EDGE LORENZO CARTER

Only cave dwellers are unaware of the Jets desperate need to get an edge pass rusher. The rangy 6-6, 250-pound Carter might not have lived up to all the hype that followed him to Georgia, but there's enough intriguing ability to grab him on Day 2. Here's the rub: Will Carter even make it to the Jets in the third round (No. 72 overall)? Or would Gang Green entertain giving up assets to move into the second round?

Carter must add bulk to his frame, but he already has terrific sideline-to-sideline tracking ability. His 9 ½ sacks in the past two years don't jump off the page, but there's promise that he could develop into quality pass rusher at the next level.

GRAMBLING STATE RB MARTEZ CARTER / FLORIDA RB MARK THOMPSON

The 5-7, 193-pound Carter might be undersized, but he provides an explosive dimension as a pass catcher and returner. Carter rushed for 891 yards and added 28 receptions for 376 yards as a junior. He averaged 23.3 yards on kickoff returns and 9.6 yards on 19 punt returns. Could the Jets find their returner on Day 3? The 6-2, 237-pound Thompson could be an intriguing Day 3 option. Full disclosure: He isn't a choir boy. Thompson was nabbed for marijuana possession and trespassing in college. The JUCO transfer only managed 596 yards and six total touchdowns in 19 games at Florida, but he has a physical, bruising style that might be worth a lateround flier.
