Strip clubs sue over zone laws
THREE MANHATTAN jiggle joints and an adult bookstore sued the city Friday in a last-ditch effort to prevent zoning laws from XXX-ing them out of existence.
New York Dolls, Satin Dolls and Lace Gentlemen’s Club revived lawsuits in Manhattan Federal Court arguing that 2001 zoning and permitting regulations limiting strip clubs and other adult establishments would choke them out of existence.
An adult bookstore, The Erotica, also filed a similar suit challenging the same laws.
The regulations “will severely and unconstitutionally reduce the availability of constitutionally protected erotic expression in New York City,” the papers read.
The city has held off on enforcing the rules due to years of litigation. The State Court of Appeals upheld the laws last year, resulting in the strip clubs reactivating their suits at the federal level.
As the XXX joints have fought their losing legal battle — so far — their industry has steadily suffered.
In 1993 there were 177 adult establishments in the city. Currently, there are 20, according to the suit.
