JAKE & METS KICK AS’

DeGrom stellar, Cabrera does rest

-

SAN DIEGO — Jacob deGrom gave the Mets 7.1 scoreless innings and Asdrubal Cabrera made sure he got the win. The veteran second baseman hit a three-run homer to ensure a 5-1 win over the Padres at Petco Park Friday night.

The Mets (16-8) snapped a two-game losing streak, which tied their longest of the season, and took the opener of the three-game series against the Padres (9-18).

DeGrom (3-0) scattered five hits, struck out eight and walked three Friday night. He extended his scoreless streak to 14.1 straight innings and has 30 strikeouts over his last three starts. But in this start, the Mets finally got him a win. In his last two starts, which were perhaps even more dominating, the Mets bullpen had collapsed.

In his last start, in fact, deGrom had posted seven scoreless innings only to come up empty.

Friday night, however, Jerry Blevins and AJ Ramos got the Mets out of the eighth barely unscathed.

Then Matt Harvey, making his second appearance out of the bullpen, gave up a solo shot to Franchy Cordero in the ninth. He walked Jose Pirela, the second batter he faced, before he got out of the inning with a 4-6-3 double play.

Cabrera contributed to four of the Mets five runs Friday. He scored the first after leading off the game with a double and then drove home three in the seventh with his fifth homer of the season.

Jose Lobaton doubled in a run in the eighth and had two knocks on the night.

The Mets had handed deGrom a one-run lead before he even took the mound. Asdrubal Cabrera led off the game with a double and scored on Todd Frazier’s single.
