DWI susp had tot in ambulette

- Laura Dimon

A LONG ISLAND man drunkenly took off in an ambulette, driving the vehicle erratically and leading cops on a brief chase — all with his toddler son in the back, police said Sunday.

A passerby called 911 after spotting Horace Campbell allegedly assaulting his girlfriend outside NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola about 11:30 p.m. Saturday, cop sources said.

When police responded, Campbell (photo), 38, a driver for Empire State Medi-Cab, hightailed it in a white Empire ambulette he was driving, Nassau County police said.

Cops spotted the vehicle and tried to stop Campbell on Mineola Blvd. near Old Country Road — but Campbell, who’s from Hempstead, continued south on Franklin Ave., swerving in and out of his lane for 2 miles. He finally stopped at W. Columbia St. in Hempstead, according to authorities.

Campbell appeared intoxicated, said police, who discovered the man’s 18-month-old son in the rear compartment of the ambulette. The unharmed boy was returned to the custody of a family member, officials said.

Campbell’s 34-year-old girlfriend was treated at a local hospital for bruising and swelling to her face, cops said.

Charges against Campbell include endangering the welfare of a child, DWI, unlawful fleeing of police and assault.
