Cops defend shooting ma of tragic tot
A WOMAN’S panicked 911 call brought cops rushing to the Westchester County home where a wild sequence of events left a toddler dead from unknown causes and her knife-wielding mother shot by the officers who tried to help.
“I’ve got a woman on the phone screaming, ‘Please come help me!’ ” a dispatcher said, according to police radio traffic of the shooting Saturday afternoon.
Struggling through a language barrier with the caller, the dispatcher managed to glean “that someone may be dying.”
Mamaroneck police officials said Sunday the officers acted appropriately when they Tasered, then shot and wounded the 28-year-old mom, who allegedly attacked two of them with a knife at the home on Chestnut Ave.
Mamaroneck Police Chief Christopher Leahy declined to identify the mother but said she is “continuing to receive care at the hospital.”
The woman’s 2-year-old daughter died at an area hospital. An autopsy is pending.
