Qns. pol pushes crime-gun logs

- Kenneth Lovett

ALBANY — A Queens state senator wants to make it easier for New Yorkers to know where criminals get their guns.

Sen. Michael Gianaris, a Democrat, is set to introduce a bill Monday to require the Department of Criminal Justice Services and the state police to publish quarterly reports on their websites about the origins of firearms used in crimes.

“New York has very strict gun laws,” Gianaris told the Daily News. “The problem is illegal guns are getting into our state from other places. Exploring where they are coming from will shine a light on exactly where the problem lies.”

Gianaris said while the origins of guns used in New York crimes are generally known, making specific data public “will help focus advocacy efforts in the right place.”

The reports would include what state and county the guns came from, where they were originally purchased, and whether they were bought by the perpetrator of the crime or a third party.
