Man, 65, sets himself ablaze and dies in car

- Laura Dimon

A 65-YEAR-OLD man killed himself by setting himself on fire inside his car in a Queens Home Depot parking lot, cops said Sunday.

The bizarre suicide came just two weeks after a famed civil rights lawyer died when he immolated himself in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park to draw attention to pollution and global warming from fossil fuels.

The Queens victim, who police sources say suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, set himself ablaze in his Toyota 4Runner inside the Home Depot lot on 31st Ave. near 123rd St. in College Point about 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

Cops responding to a 911 call about a person with severe burns found him dead in the driver’s seat with a gas canister next to him in the passenger seat, officials said.

The man’s wife told police he had threatened to harm himself the day before. The victim’s name was not immediately released.

On April 14, David Buckel, 60, a nationally known advocate for gay rights and the environment, doused himself in gas and set himself on fire inside Prospect Park, horrifying parkgoers.

“My early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves,” he wrote in a note left near the circle of charred grass where his remains were found.

“Here is a hope that giving a life might bring some attention to the need for expanded actions, and help others give a voice to our home, and Earth is heard.”
