State Dems to press GOP on kid-vic justice
ALBANY — Assembly Democrats will vote this week on a bill to make it easier for child sex abuse survivors to seek justice as adults — pressuring state Senate Republicans who have long blocked the measure.
“We must take action to protect victims of childhood sexual abuse and ensure access to justice for survivors,” Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) told the Daily News.
“The Assembly majority has long led the way on this important issue and I hope that it can finally become law this year.”
The bill, likely to be voted on Tuesday, will let prosecutors bring criminal cases any time up to a victim’s 23rd birthday, and allow civil lawsuits against abusers any time up to a victim’s 50th birthday.
Public institutions would be treated the same as private institutions. Currently, child victims have 90 days from the time of an incident to file notices of claim against school districts and other local or state government entities.
