Parcells: Just get back in the huddle
SAM DARNOLD’S head is probably filled with countless pieces of advice from well-wishers these days, but the newest Jets quarterback would be smart to listen to wisdom from a guy who knows a thing or two about football.
When the Tuna talks, it would behoove you to pay attention.
Darnold recently revealed that he took two pages of notes from his meeting with Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells in the run-up to the draft. He’d be wise to reference those notes throughout his NFL career.
“I think the main thing with him was, ‘Just get back in the huddle,’ ” Darnold told reporters at USC Pro Day in late March about his discussion with Parcells. “That was the main phrase he kept saying. No matter what the score is on Sunday, no matter what happens on Sunday, Monday or Thursday, just get back in the huddle that next week.”
It’s terrific advice for the former USC signal caller. A short-term memory will be required when he faces inevitable early bumps in the road.
“He’s consistent,” personal quarterbacks coach Jordan Palmer, who has worked with Darnold for years, told the Daily News. “He’s always the same. He’s always respectful. He’s always professional. He’s just going to be consistent. Inevitably whenever adversity hits him and he’s really struggling at some point, he’s going to be the exact same way as if they’re on top of the world. You’re not going to be able to dig up really interesting crazy stories about Sam Darnold over the next 15 years.”
Parcells was a master at getting the best out of his players. Times change, but there’s no better way to learn from your mistakes than to not dwell on them. Get back in the huddle. Solid advice.
