RELIGIOUS JEWELS WILL RULE AT MET GALA

- Brian Niemietz

She has a good reason why. “13 Reasons Why” actress Katherine Langford will wear a $1.25 million diamond studded cross to Monday’s Met Gala, where the theme is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” The pendant is on loan from M.S. Rau Antiques, which lists the item as a gift Pope Paul VI presented to the United Nations in 1965. Langford will pair that piece with a 13.6-carat ring, also given to the UN by Pope Paul VI. According to the New Orleans based antique shop, that $64,000 piece “is engraved with the Christian Chi Rho symbol, indicating that it was almost certainly made by Vatican jewelers in the early 1900s with gemstones from the Vatican’s own collection.” That piece, with the Pope’s blessing, was originally auctioned to fight global poverty. It once belonged to daredevil Evel Knieval.

Other gems expected to attend the Met Gala include human rights attorney Amal Clooney, singer Rihanna and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
