Gennady Golovkin won his 20th consecutiv­e middleweig­ht title defense with a second-round knockout of Vanes Martirosya­n on Saturday night.

Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 KOs) tied Bernard Hopkins’ record for middleweig­ht title defenses by sending Martirosya­n down at 1:53 of the second round.

l Tony Bellew might have sent David Haye into retirement after stopping the former world heavyweigh­t champion in the fifth round in a rematch in London. Bellew, a cruiserwei­ght, knocked down Haye three times before the referee brought a stop to the fight, with Haye leaning on the ropes and apparently injured with an ankle problem. of a course that was 228 yards shorter and soft enough that the players actually found pitch marks on the greens. Woods finally got going on the back nine with three straight birdies, but a three-putt bogey on the final hole gave him a 68. He was nine shots behind.

Venus Williams lost to Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in the first round of the Madrid Open on Saturday.

Kontaveit rallied from a set down to beat the eighth-seeded Williams 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on the outdoor clay court.

“I’d lost to her two times already, and so I had nothing to lose,” Kontaveit said.
