- BY NICOLE HENSLEY

THREE PEOPLE were critically hurt Sunday in Westchester County when an out-of-control driver backed into an Italian restaurant packed with patrons, police said.

The driver plowed through the patio and into Enzo’s Ristorante on Mamaroneck Ave. in Mamaroneck just before 8 p.m., cops said.

Mamaroneck Mayor Tom Murphy, who was dining across the street at the time, said the car tore a gaping hole through the restaurant, where a pair of French doors had stood.

“It’s the strangest thing,” Murphy said. “The car is facing outward.”

The red car is believed to have clipped another vehicle while backing out of parking spot, according to surveillance footage obtained ABC Eyewitness News obtained.

The driver then kept going in reverse, eventually colliding with the restaurant.

“It’s one of those things. How did this physically happen? I can’t wrap my mind around it,” Murphy said.

In addition to the three critically injured people, several others were hurt in the wreck. Authorities did not specify a number.

The driver was among those injured, the mayor said.
