Nix takes de-bait of an Andy faceoff
ALBANY — Gov. Cuomo and Cynthia Nixon could go head to head for the first time in a primetime televised debate.
WABC-TV has pitched the faceoff between the two Democratic primary candidates — with Nixon quickly hopping aboard to accept on Monday and also calling for a series of one-on-one debates across the state between the two.
“I believe voters deserve to hear a frank and direct discussion of the real issues facing New Yorkers, and the difference between my progressive vision for this state, and Gov. Cuomo's centrist record,” Nixon said in a video.
Cuomo campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said he was game for a debate, but didn’t give a number.
“We are currently receiving invitations and reviewing the various opportunities,” she said.
“The people of NY deserve a robust, detailed debate on the issues that matter most.”
Cuomo had not previously said whether he’d debate Nixon — just that a decision would be made later. In 2014, he refused to debate his Democratic primary challenger, Fordham Law Prof. Zephyr Teachout.
