Prof slain in B’klyn home
A HAMMER-WIELDING intruder was found cowering in a closet after killing a Brooklyn psychology professor in his home Monday night, police sources said.
Cops found the body of Jeremy Safran, 66, a professor at the New School for Social Research, in the basement of his Stratford Road home in Ditmas Park just before 6 p.m., according to sources. They said officers also found a blood-covered man hiding in the closet.
Safran had head and body trauma, police said. The 28-year-old intruder was taken into custody for questioning in what police believe was a botched burglary.
Safran lived in the house with his wife and two daughters, neighbors said. “It’s shocking because we’ve been here for 24 years,” said neighbor Jillian Daniels. “You become so complacent you don’t think about something like this.”
Safran had taught at the New School since 1993 and wrote several books. In 2016, he received the Distinguished Research Career Award from the Society of Psychotherapy Research.
“Jeremy was deeply respected and admired by The New School community and his colleagues throughout the psychology profession,” school spokeswoman Amy Malsin said Monday night. “We offer our deepest condolences to his family.”
