Commish faces bribe trial quiz
THE CITY’S top cop and other Police Department brass may have to take the stand in the upcoming corruption trial of a former NYPD deputy inspector and two businessmen.
NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill was one of 10 high-ranking officers who were subpoenaed by Deputy Inspector James Grant’s defense lawyer to testify at the trial, which is expected to start later this month in Manhattan Federal Court.
Prosecutors revealed O’Neill’s name on Tuesday during a pretrial hearing while they tried to get a judge to quash some of the subpoenas. O’Neill’s subpoena was one that should be thrown out because his testimony would be irrelevant to the case, the prosecutors said.
Grant is accused of accepting bribes in exchange for doing favors for Brooklyn businessman Jeremy Reichberg and Manhattan developer Jona Rechnitz. He and Reichberg are on trial together.
