Price is wrong for Sox pitcher

- BY PETER BOTTE AND MIKE MAZZEO

David Price will not make his scheduled start against the Yankees on Wednesday after experiencing the same left-hand numbness that forced him out of a game against them after one inning on April 11.

The $217 million lefty was sent back to Boston for further tests, Cora said. Price will be replaced at least for this turn in the rotation by Rick Porcello, with Eduardo Rodriguez moved up to pitch on Thursday.

“His last bullpen (on Sunday), David had the same symptoms that he had before, so we sent him home,” Cora said. “We decided it was better for him to go back to Boston and check it out…As soon as I heard what was going on, I think we’re better off for him to see what’s going on and get more tests and go from there and make a decision.

Price, who spent time last season on the disabled list with elbow inflammation, sports a career ERA of 4.67 against the Yankees, with a record of 15-12, over 39 career appearances.

“I’m not saying that he will miss his next start or there’s a DL situation here, but obviously we want to make sure what’s going,” Cora said. “I was concerned on Sunday when I heard about it, and obviously his health is what’s most important.”

ACROSS THE POND

London is calling for the Yankees and Red Sox, with MLB officially announcing the previously reported plans for the two rivals to meet for two games in England next June.

“Never been to London, so I think it’s pretty cool to go across the pond, I like that,” Aaron Boone said before Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Boston. “It’s a chance to spread our game and I think that’s awesome, to have this rivalry, Red Sox-Yankees, to go over there to promote our game with the amount of young star players that exist on both clubs.

“Hopefully it’s something that our guys will always take with them, something that will be memorable for them, but also, on a larger picture, just something that will continue to grow our game, the game that we love.”

The Red Sox, whose owner John Henry also owns Liverpool of the English Premier League, will be the home team for MLB’s first two games to be played in Europe on June 2930 of 2019. Interestingly, according to the Boston Globe, Sox star Mookie Betts just found out earlier this week that he is a distant relative of actress Meghan Markle, who soon will marry Prince Harry.

“I saw on television that they were getting married. But I had no idea we were related,” Betts told the Globe. “That’s not something you expect to hear, but it’s interesting.”

TAKING FLIGHT

Greg Bird (ankle) homered Tuesday in an extended spring game and Boone said he “probably any day now” will begin a minor-league rehab assignment… Jacoby Ellsbury (oblique, foot) had resumed baseball activities but “was sent home” on Monday because he was “under the weather,” Boone added… Knicks coach David Fizdale threw out the ceremonial first pitch.
