5 BIG MEN ALLOW YOU TO COMPETE
Gettleman loves to quote that Tom Coughlin line, and this weekend will be the Giants’ first opportunity to see all of their new heavy additions on both lines: on offense, second-round UTEP guard Will Hernandez and undrafted rookie free agent Nebraska tackle Nick Gates, and on defense, third-round (69th overall) N.C. State tackle B.J. Hill and fifth-round tackle R.J. McIntosh. Hernandez, 22, a 6-2, 337-pound mauler, is expected to start at left guard in Week 1. I want to see how well he pulls out and upfield on screens and outside runs, because I’ve received conflicting feedback on his ability to do it. Gates (6-5, 307) hopefully at least adds depth at the tackle position, which the Giants lack. Hill, 23, at 6-3, 311 pounds, should factor into the D-line rotation. McIntosh, 21, at 6-5, 286 pounds, is considered a bit more raw and further away, but his production was there for the Hurricanes, so who knows.
