Cop probed in gun sales on city time
AN NYPD detective assigned to the Bronx district attorney’s office is accused of working his side job as a gun dealer on city time, the Daily News has learned.
Detective Lionel Holman is under investigation by both the NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau and the Department of Investigation, according to police and bureau sources.
His client list, believed to be other cops, is part of the probe. One source said it was incumbent on anyone in a supervisory rank to blow the whistle on Holman (photo).
“If he’s selling to people who outrank him, how does that look?” one source said. “No one thought that looks bad?”
Another source said Holman was seen at least once with what looked like an assaultstyle rifle. Such guns, if modified to meet strict state restrictions, can legally be sold in New York.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says Holman has a Type 1 license and is allowed to deal in firearms “other than destructive devices.”
He is registered in Rockland County, where he lives, and is technically prohibited from selling outside the county.
The agency admits that there is a “gray area” that seemingly allows a dealer to take an order in the county of registration, then deliver the firearm to a customer in another county.
NYPD rules, however, prohibit him from selling guns in the city.
Holman, who joined the NYPD in 2000, also has his own security firm, Frontline Security & Training Services. He told The News he wasn’t allowed to talk to the media and referred all questions to the Police Department’s press office. A spokesman declined comment.
The Investigation Department said it could not discuss any details because to do so “would interfere with active law enforcement investigations or judicial proceedings.”
Holman in 2016 was cited by Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark for his work interviewing alibi witnesses in a case that led to the dismissal of murder charges against a man who served 20 years for a killing he did not commit.
A spokesman for Clark declined comment on Holman, referring questions to the NYPD.
