Melania in hosp for kidney woe
FIRST LADY Melania Trump underwent kidney surgery Monday and is expected to remain hospitalized for several days, her spokeswoman said.
Trump (photo) had been experiencing issues with her kidney and was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside Washington for an “embolization,” the First Lady’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said.
Embolizations are often conducted to treat cancerous tumors, but Grisham said the 48-year-old Trump’s kidney condition was benign.
“The First Lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere,” Grisham said, adding that Trump will likely stay at the hospital “for the duration of the week.”
President Trump remained at the White House during his wife’s operation, but announced he was visiting her shortly after 5 p.m.
“Successful procedure, she is in good spirits,” Trump tweeted. “Thank you to all of the well-wishers!”
Trump is the first presidential spouse to undergo a medical procedure of such gravity while in the White House since Nancy Reagan, who had a mastectomy in 1987.
The kidney operation comes after an unusually busy period for the otherwise press-shy First Lady.
Last week, Trump rolled out “Be Best,” an awareness campaign to combat cyberbullying and promote general well-being among children. Last month, the First Lady hosted the Trumps’ first official state dinner, for French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron.
