Golden Knights pull even

-

JONATHAN Marchessault scored twice and MarcAndre Fleury stopped 30 shots, lifting the visiting Vegas Golden Knights to a 3-1 series-evening victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals.

“Every time we need a big game as a group, we show up,” Marchessault said. “Maybe we showed the hockey world we deserve to be here.”

Kyle Connor scored midway through the third period to pull Winnipeg within a goal. Marchessault restored the two-goal lead 1:28 later.

Tomas Tatar scored 6:37 into the game for the Golden Knights.

Connor Hellebuyck had 25 saves for the Jets.

Game 3 is Wednesday night in Las Vegas.

The expansion Golden Knights appeared to be rusty in the series opener and the Jets scored three goals early in a 4-2 win .

MANAEA TOPS SOX AGAIN

In Boston, Sean Manaea beat the Red Sox again in his first outing against them since pitching a nohitter, and Khris Davis hit one of three solo homers by the Athletics in a 6-5 victory. Matt Joyce and Matt Olson also went deep for the A’s, who had lost five of six to the Astros and Yankees. Davis connected for his team-leading 12th home run as Oakland handed Rick Porcello his first loss of the season.

l The Seattle Mariners say they will have a better idea on the projected length of Robinson Cano’s recovery time after the second baseman is examined by a hand specialist in Philadelphia today.

The eight-time All-Star broke the pinkie of his right hand when hit by a pitch from left-hander Blaine Hardy on Sunday at the Detroit.

Cano is batting .287 with four homers, 23 RBI and a .385 on-base percentage in 39 games this season.

Seattle put Cano on the 10-day disabled list and recalled infielder Gordon Beckham from Tacoma of the Triple-A International League. l San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner threw off a mound for the first time since surgery in March to have three pins inserted into the broken pinkie on his pitching hand.

JETS CLAIM PAT OFF WAIVERS

The Jets have claimed offensive tackle Antonio Garcia off waivers from the Patriots and waived kicker Nick Rose.

Garcia was a third-round draft pick of the Patriots last year out of Troy, but did not play because he was dealing with blood clots in his lungs. New England placed him on the reserve/non-football injury list in September and waived him last Friday.

The 6-foot-6, 302-pound Garcia told reporters in March that he was cleared to return to football. He will add depth to the Jets’ offensive line.

The Jets had claimed Rose off waivers from the Chargers last month. The Jets also have Cairo Santos on their roster and signed Taylor Bertolet last week after he had a tryout during rookie minicamp.
