Miggy is mad over Cano’s med ban

- BY JOHN HEALY

MIGUEL Cabrera is livid over the Robinson Cano suspension.

The Tigers first baseman vehemently defended Cano, who was suspended on Tuesday for 80 games after violating the MLB joint drug agreement by testing positive for Furosemide, a diuretic.

“He (plays) every day. He does everything right,” Cabrera told The Detroit Free Press on Tuesday. “Now everybody is going to write all this stupid (s--t).”

Furosemide is a banned substance in MLB because of its ability to act as a masking agent for performance-enhancing drugs. Cano — an eight-time All-Star — said in a statement that he was prescribed it by a doctor in the Dominican Republic to treat a medical issue. Cabrera is buying Cano’s side of the story and does not consider what he has done cheating.

“I know Cano for a lot of years and I know he didn’t cheat,” he said. “I’m f---ing mad right now.

“His doctor prescribed the medication. I think he got all the paperwork. Why he get positive? I don’t understand that. If it’s something for him to get better.”

Cabrera said if he did not live in the United States he would be scared of unknowingly being prescribed a banned substance.

“I live in Miami. If I lived in Venezuela, I might test positive, too,” he said. “If I need some medicine, I gotta take (it). If I gotta take something to get better if I’m sick, I’m going to take it. I’m going to do the same thing Cano do because I need it.”

Cano initially appealed the positive test but dropped the appeal this week, just days after he was placed on the disabled list with a broken bone in his right hand.

Cabrera, a two-time MVP award winner and sure-fire Hall of Famer, believes Cano is on the path to Cooperstown, too, which upsets him the most.

“That’s why I’m so mad,” he said. “He’s a Hall of Fame player.”
