His memory – and his name – live on

-

THE MURDER of little Prince Joshua Avitto shook the city in 2014 — but now his memory will live on in a brand new Brooklyn community center bearing his name.

Mayor de Blasio was on hand Thursday for a ribbon cutting at the new Prince Joshua Avitto Community Center, not far from the Boulevard Houses in East New York where the boy known as P.J. was stabbed to death by Daniel St. Hubert. His best friend Mikayla Capers, then 7, survived the attack — and testified against St. Hubert.

The killer was convicted of the horrific crime last month.

“Every one of us can remember what we felt when we heard what happened to Prince Joshua Avitto. There are some moments in this city that everybody feels,” de Blasio said. “We all felt that Prince Joshua was our child, too, and we all felt an obligation to support this family.”

One way of doing that was to rename the long-in-the-works community center for little P.J. De Blasio said it would be a safe place for thousands of children.

“This will be the environment they learn and grow in, that they will enjoy, that they will feel empowered by,” de Blasio said.

P.J.’s mom, Aricka McClinton, said she was overwhelmed by the show of support.

“I know today he’s shining down on us,” she said.
