RACIST OR JUST AN IDIOT?

Aaron Schlossberg, the socalled racist lawyer, is many things, but a racist? Not necessarily. Screaming at people for speaking Spanish makes him a xenophobe, a person who fears and loathes anything/ anyone foreign.

Does he fear the loss of identity? Is he aggressive in his desire to eliminate foreigners who he thinks are here illegally? Clearly. But for that, you gotta check off the xenophobe box.

Is he a Trump wannabe who threatened to call ICE on people speaking Spanish because he immediately assumed they were illegal immigrants living off his taxes? For that, check off the Trump true believer box.

Is he a racist who deserves to be disbarred, as some lawyers are demanding, for mouthing off at people at a takeout joint for not speaking English and — like Trump — insulting them for perhaps being overweight? Not so fast.

To be disbarred, Schlossberg probably would have to be determined to have committed moral turpitude, which is, according to Miriam Webster Legal, “an act or behavior that gravely violates the sentiment or accepted standard of the community.”

We may hate it and hate him for it, but does yelling at employees and patrons to speak English and put down the sandwich gravely violate community standards?

Check the bigot box please, for someone who won’t tolerate other’s beliefs, language, or background. And also the idiot box for wearing that wool watch cap in May.

But if every lawyer who is an idiot or a bigot was disbarred in this country, we’d lose half the attorneys, which may be a good thing, but still …

Meantime, attorney Michael Cohen whose picture will be replacing the “moral turpitude” definition in Webster’s for paying hush money to porn stars and pregnant Playmates, and attempting to sell influence to the White House still has his law license.

Schlossberg doesn’t need to be disbarred. Why not leave it to his clients to decide his fate?
