Prison-reform break
Criminal justice reformers fear years of momentum toward saner and more humane incarceration policies have been lost under President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, both of whom hold themselves out as oldfashioned, no-nonsense law-and-order types. Those fears may have been premature. At a summit on prison reform Friday, President Trump signaled his willingness to sign a bipartisan reform bill that would aim to reduce recidivism rates by encouraging inmates to get job training, education and drug treatment while behind bars.
“If we want more prisoners to take charge of their own lives, then we should work to give them the tools to stand on their own two feet.”
Those are the right words. We await action.
