Act right now to save kids’ lives

-

Lakewood, N.J.: I think that the #NeverAgain movement should begin to recruit members into the NRA. I also think that every single person who opposes the NRA should join. We will then have the ability to take over this shameful organization and then vote to disband it forever. When will the clown in the White House and the rest of Congress realize that their thoughts and prayers are meaningless? They need to act now and should start by amending the antiquated Second Amendment! Stop killing our kids, NRA, Trump and Congress!

Frank Mongiello Carmel, N.Y.: Can’t we pay school resource officers to be assigned at every school? It’s an affordable solution to protect our most precious children. Most police nationwide probably only make $25 to $50 an hour. Raise school taxes, and/or let parents pay extra while their children are in school. Many retired or off-duty police would gladly volunteer, especially if they had children attending local schools. They alone are a valuable resource. No more debating, start acting. Also: Put metal detectors in every school. Lock every entrance door. Require ID to be shown to security camera, along with the reason you are visiting the school, before entry. There are no more excuses. Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Michael Bloomberg and our richest corporations could foot the bill. Our children are their future employees.

Sin of omission

Bronx: Why didn’t Thursday’s front page of the Daily News have a screaming headline, “Hamas admits that 52 out of the 60 people killed on Monday were its members,” i.e., terrorists? On Tuesday your front page was pointedly anti-Israel and borderline anti-Semitic. It pictured Ivanka Trump, an Orthodox Jewish woman, pointing her hand at the carnage on the Gaza strip. The pose seemed to imply approval. The Hamas admission was worthy of the same publicity — yet you chose to bury it on page 8, and even play it down in the story. Hamas members are armed, throw hand grenades, and wield Molotov cocktails. Your failure betrays deep bias unworthy of a great paper. Kenneth S. Gelnick East Windsor, N.J.: All members of Congress, Republican, Democrat and Independent, were invited to go to Jerusalem for the celebration of the opening of the new Jerusalem embassy. Unfortunately, only Republicans showed up. On the other hand, a number of Democrats, including former President Obama, have had their picture taken with Louis Farrakhan. Farrakhan once called Judaism a “gutter religion.” Do the Democrats think they can get away with this? Arthur Horn

A short story

Astoria: I was waiting at the Q103 bus stop in the pouring rain with two lovely fellow New Yorkers. One was singing along to his bad music. The other took cover under the same small overhang that I had claimed and proceeded to cough, spit and blow his nose into the sidewalk with no tissues or sleeves or even hands for cover. The three of us then proceeded to watch our bus, just mere feet away, inch towards us at what I imagine is the slowest possible speed for a vehicle to travel without it actually just being stopped, while cars in the intersection backed up and blocked our lane. Over and over again. Then the singer started flailing his arms and yelling at the cars that were blocking traffic and our bus: “You are so stupid! New Yorkers are so f--king stupid!” Then the snot machine started yelling at the cars too. “Morons! What morons!” There was nothing heartwarming about it, but I suddenly felt better knowing that I wasn’t alone in my angst — that here we were, people of varying etiquette or lack thereof, all with common hopes and dreams. Mainly, that we just wanted to get on the damned bus.

He had a point

Kew Gardens Hills: While I agree that attorney Aaron Schlossberg is a big-mouth bigot and a racist, let us not forget that he is just voicing the same frustration that is being felt by many millions of Americans across the country. Illegal immigrants, including those with violent pasts, are being given sanctuary in cities all across the U.S. Many of them are also getting free education, free if not discounted college education, driving privileges, taxpayer-funded abortions, and other benefits that born-in-the-U.S. citizens don’t get. The least the illegal immigrants can do to show their appreciation by learning English. When my grandparents came to this country from Europe in the early 1900s they busted their butts to learn how to speak the language. The United States is one of a handful of countries in the world that does not even have an official language. Why?

Barry Koppel

Aaron’s arrogance

West Orange, N.J.: To Aaron Schlossberg: Did your grandparents speak English when they came to this country? I know mine didn’t. Who raised you to be so hateful with such an arrogant sense of entitlement? And you had the nerve to threaten to deport these people. I only hope you one day have to make a living in another country with another language. Shame on you.

Miriam Sheff

Go easy on him

Manhattan: I have no love for Aaron Schlossberg, but it’s impossible to feel anything but contempt and loathing for the opportunistic pols who seek to exploit this story, or for the social-media cowards who hide behind the anonymity of the web to torment him over his recent outburst. Hey, give the guy a break — he was probably just overwhelmed with excitement over Israel’s recent massacre of dozens of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Steven Sica

Glass houses

Staten Island: White House Chief of Staff John Kelly’s Irish grandfather may have dug the Erie Canal. Lawyer Aaron Schlossberg’s grandparents probably only spoke Yiddish when they first came here. It’s so easy to forget the past and cast aspersions on newcomers to our country.

Al Posecznick

Fake news

Monroe, N.J.: How can you misrepresent what the President said as unfairly as you did (“Trump hurls pure hate at immigrants,” May 17)? He was specifically asked about MS-13. What would you call those gangs?

Kathleen Andvord

Fanning the flames

Yonkers: Leave it to the Daily News to fan the flames of racism. You know damn well the President didn’t say all immigrants are animals. He was referring to question asked by a California sheriff about the gang MS-13 — who, by the way, are responsible for multiple murders and rapes. You took every word he said out of context. Shame on you.

You all have lost it

Oakland Gardens: I never believed it could be true, but all evidence points to the fact that Trump Derangement Syndrome is a real thing. I am not an expert on psychology, like, say, Samantha Bee or Sanjay Gupta, but the unhinged rants from Voicers, media folk and, of course, Mike Lupica, while hilariously entertaining, are also borderline intervention-worthy. Voicer Paul Harris’ “apology to the world” was especially cringe-inducing. Seek help if you can, but keep AP those letters coming, TDS folks. They are priceless. Mike Murphy Hawthorne, N.J.: In June, it will be the 50th anniversary of the death of RFK. It seems like yesterday when I was in high school and took the bus to Paterson, N.J., because I heard Bobby was at the Alexander Hamilton Hotel convention room. I was thrilled to see him. I grabbed his hand as he walked by and startled him. He looked back and saw me and squeezed my hand back. When he spoke, you could see the compassion and caring in his eyes and his voice. I have never seen anyone since so sincere. I see all the division and hate in this country today and it saddens me. Whatever happened to seeking that newer world? We have a President and Congress who don’t care about people, just money and votes. And we have people who are so hateful they don’t seem to care either. Why can’t people sit down and talk civilly about subjects instead of just name-calling? I miss you, Bobby.

Legalize everything?

Eastchester, N.Y.: So since there are more minorities being arrested for marijuana, now New York will likely make it legal. What’s next? If more minorities are arrested for robbery, assault and domestic violence, will New York make those crimes legal so the minority community will not feel that the legal system is biased?
