Discover Glen Rock

- The Rock of Glen Rock

The story of Glen Rock actually began about 15,000 years ago. A study by the Glen Rock Environmental Commission found that the iconic 570-ton boulder in the center of our borough, or The Rock, was picked up by the Wisconsinan Glacier from the Hudson River Valley before being deposited in the glen. According to the Glen Rock Historical and Preservation Society, The Rock served as a trail marker for the Lenape Indians, was a landmark for early settlers in deeds for surveying their farms and homesteads, was noted on Revolutionary War maps as either ‘Big Rock’ or ‘The Rock’, and now serves as a World War I monument and is home to a time capsule that will be opened in 2044, our 150th birthday.

When our kids are not taking part in the many after-school activity programs offered by the schools, they can enjoy our top-notch recreational or travel sports programs. It is important to note that our recreational activities extend to adults as well with softball and basketball leagues, and more.

We also provide a number of great programs and services to our seniors. Our Senior Shuttle is free and operates every weekday, taking residents on scheduled shopping visits, to their own doctor appointments, or to special events. We also have Glen Courts, a senior housing complex right in the center of town and an increasing number of senior recreational activities. Our Senior Advisory Committee meets monthly and assures that the needs of our local seniors are met.

Many Glen Rock residents commute to their jobs every day via our two train stations, both of which provide transportation directly to Secaucus or Hoboken, with express trains running during rush hours. There are also several conveniently located bus stops and if you prefer to drive, you can hop right onto Route 208 and make your way south.

In between the two train stations is our Central Business District on Rock Road, an assortment of fine stores, restaurants, and all of the services that one would need right in our cozy, small town. As if that was not enough, there are more restaurants and fantastic shops and businesses throughout the borough.

When our residents are not shopping locally, you might find them at the Glen Rock Pool, which includes both an Olympic sized main pool and a children’s pool.

The Thielke Arboretum of Glen Rock offers nature trails, a beautiful pond, gardens, and a sparkling brook, and a peaceful escape from the rush of our everyday lives. There are various other parks including the Saddle River County Park, the Children’s Park, Wilde Memorial Park, and Veteran’s Park which houses a 9/11 memorial in tribute to the eleven residents who were lost that day.

Believe it or not, there is so much more to the Glen Rock experience, including our commitment to sustainability or our welcoming, inclusive community spirit, and we hope that you will stop by for a visit or consider joining our wonderful community. — Bruce Packer, Mayor of Glen Rock
