Trump seeks to probe the probers
HE WANTS to sic the feds on the feds.
In a tweet Sunday, President Trump demanded that the Justice Department launch an investigation to find out if the FBI spied on his campaign.
“I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes — and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!” the President tweeted Sunday.
Reports emerged over the weekend that an alleged FBI informant may have met with campaign advisers Sam Clovis, Carter Page and George Papadopoulos.
Trump’s demand coincided with gripes from Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee who told Fox News on Sunday that the FBI has been reluctant to hand over files about the informant.
“If they didn’t do anything like that, provide us the documents so we can verify it,” the Trump loyalist said Sunday, adding that confirmation of an informant is “an absolute red line.”
The FBI has expressed concern about exposing a confidential source, but the federal agency has tried to reach a compromise on sharing information.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein released a statement Sunday that read, “If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action.”
Legal experts remained skeptical that the Department of Justice would answer Trump’s demand — or even if he’ll follow through with it.
“There is also no doubt in my mind that neither the attorney general (who is recused anyway) nor the deputy attorney general nor the FBI director can in good conscience comply with such an order,” tweeted Benjamin Wittes, a fellow at the left-leaning Brookings Institution who blogs on legal issues. “And I don’t believe they will.”
